Sharelle Cameron commonly known as Jeyne Doe is a New York based singer/songwriter. The “Stay With Me” singer embodied her family’s love for music at a young age, writing songs at only 4 years old. Coming up she was shy about her soft voice but gained the knowledge and confidence to overcome the fear. I had the chance to have an in depth conversation with Jeyne and she basically breaks down her background, where things are with her career now and what’s about to come.

Where are you from?

Jeyne: I’m from Long Island, NY, a little outside of Queens. My family is originally from Brooklyn so I was the first one born and raised in Long Island.

What’s your family background?

Jeyne: Both of my parents are African-American and most of my family consists of musicians. My parents had a singing group back in the day when they lived in Brooklyn. They would constantly win talent contests and became locally famous in the 1970’s. At one point, Quincy Jones wanted to sign them and for whatever reason at the time, they turned down the deal. I have 2 older sisters who were both the stars in their school band. They both played the role of drum major and my middle sister was always chosen as first chair clarinet for concerts. She would beat out clarinet players from all over Long Island. I grew up with a variety of music styles in my household. Saturday’s were music days. My mother would play her old 45 records and my father would play his bass guitar. We would sing as a family. My mother and sister were always soprano and my father sang bass.

Birthday?

Jeyne: I was born on July 15, 1991.

What’s your come up story (if any)?

Jeyne: I guess I don’t really have a “come up story” but I will say I was always shy and self conscious about my voice. My mother and sister always had these powerful voices and would sing along to Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin. I hated my “soft” voice and for a long time I stopped music because of it. Music is the love of my life and I was always too afraid to pursue it. I went from taking voice lessons and going to studios as a teen to only singing in my bedroom. Around 2018, I had enough and decided to suck it up and go back to vocal training and making music. I’ve been writing songs since I was 4 and it’s all I want to do with my life, so here I am at 29, creating the music I want to make.

What got you into music?

Jeyne: Growing up in my household simply got me into music. I grew up with Sam Cooke, The Temptations, The Supremes, Prince, Madonna, Michael, Janet, Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Blink 182…just all types of music. We never stuck to one genre and I became obsessed at an early age.

What are your goals for 2021?

Jeyne: My goals for 2021 are to gain more exposure as an artist and a songwriter. I want to collaborate with other musicians as much as I can; release more music and challenge myself lyrically and musically. I believe I have something different to offer to the current climate of music. I’m not a boxed in artist and I want more people to see that. I plan on saying “yes” to a lot more things.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected you and your music career?

Jeyne: COVID-19 affected me where I can’t perform in public. I started working on my live performances towards the end of 2019 and that’s been put on hold for now. I haven’t been able to connect with musicians the way I wanted to, especially because I suck at social media (LOL).

Talk about some upcoming projects…

Jeyne: I have a few projects lined up for 2021 but the one coming soon is my debut EP, entitled Missing Link. It drops on all streaming and iTunes on February 19, 2021. It’s a 5 track record that depicts me as a genre-less artist. Each track is different, yet similar in a way. I mixed genres on majority of the tracks and implemented influence from genres like R&B, Funk, Trap, EDM, House and Singer-Songwriter. I think it’s pretty cool. I’ve written so much during the pandemic that I hope to drop 2 more EP’s by year end. Every song I make, I write the lyrics and the production is made from scratch. I don’t really write to beats. I have an entire production in my head, with the instruments and I know where musical breaks will go, etc. before ever getting into the studio. That’s how the EP was crafted. It was born from the chaos in my head. That’s why it’s called Missing Link because, I couldn’t pick just one thing. I was trying to find a sound for me and I needed to know what was the missing link. What works best for me? The title came to me in a dream, so I went with it.
